Audio Speed Changer
Speed audio up or slow it down from 0.5× to 2× — keeping the pitch so voices sound natural, or changing it like a tape.
Listening to a lecture, podcast or audiobook at 1.25× or 1.5× saves time; slowing a song or language lesson to 0.75× makes it easier to follow, transcribe or learn. Many players can change speed while playing, but often you need a file that is already sped up or slowed down — for a device without that setting, a video edit, a transcription tool or a practice track.
Choose a speed from 0.5× to 2×. With Keep the pitch, the tool uses time-stretching, so voices stay natural instead of turning into chipmunks or growls. With Change with speed, the pitch rises and falls with the speed, like a tape or record played faster or slower — the effect used for nightcore and slowed edits. The new length is shown before you save, and the audio never leaves your browser.
How to use Audio Speed Changer
- Choose or drop an audio file (or a video with sound).
- Type a speed or press a quick button, from 0.5× to 2×.
- Choose whether to keep the pitch.
- Choose the output format and press Change speed.
Features
- Speeds from 0.5× to 2×.
- Keep the pitch with time-stretching (WSOLA).
- Or change the pitch with the speed, like a tape.
- Shows the new length, and the pitch change in semitones.
- Saves as MP3, M4A, OGG or WAV.
- Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Common uses
Make a sped-up copy of a lecture, webinar or audiobook for a device or app without speed control. Slow down a fast guitar solo, a dance routine's music or a language-learning dialogue to practise along. Fit a voice-over to a video that is a few seconds shorter. Create slowed or sped-up edits of songs for social media. Prepare recordings for transcription at a pace that is easier to type along with. Because the result is a normal audio file, it plays at the new speed everywhere, including car stereos and smart speakers that have no speed setting at all.
Keeping the pitch
Simply playing samples faster also raises the pitch. To change speed while keeping the pitch, the tool cuts the sound into short overlapping pieces of 40 milliseconds and lays them closer together (faster) or further apart (slower). For each piece it searches for the position that joins most smoothly with the previous one, a method called WSOLA, which avoids echoes and clicks. It works very well for speech; music with sharp drum hits may sound slightly softened at extreme speeds.
Common speeds
Speech stays easy to understand up to about 1.5× for most listeners, and many people get used to 2×.
| Speed | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 0.5× | Transcribing, learning a fast musical passage |
| 0.75× | Language learning, following instructions |
| 1.25× | Podcasts and lectures, still relaxed |
| 1.5× | Audiobooks and recorded meetings |
| 2× | Skimming familiar or slow material |
Changing the pitch with the speed
In tape mode the pitch follows the speed: twice as fast sounds an octave (12 semitones) higher, half as fast an octave lower. This is the classic effect of speeding up or slowing down a record, popular for nightcore and slowed edits. The tool shows how many semitones the pitch moves for the speed you choose.
Formats and privacy
Any audio your browser can decode can be opened — MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus, FLAC and the sound of videos — and the result is saved as MP3, M4A, OGG or WAV. Lossy formats are re-encoded at the bitrate you choose. Processing happens on your device, so lectures, meetings and private recordings are never uploaded. To shorten a file by cutting parts out instead, use the Audio Trimmer or Audio Cutter.
Frequently asked questions
Can I speed up a video's sound?
Yes, open the video and its sound is saved at the new speed as an audio file.
Does slowing down reduce quality?
Time-stretching can soften sharp sounds slightly at extreme speeds; speech stays clear.
How do I speed up audio without changing the pitch?
Choose a speed above 1×, keep Keep the pitch selected, and press Change speed.
How do I slow down a song?
Choose a speed below 1×, such as 0.75×.
What speeds are possible?
From 0.5× to 2×.
How do I make a slowed or nightcore version?
Choose Change with speed, then a speed below 1× (slowed) or above 1× (nightcore).
How long will the new file be?
The original length divided by the speed; the tool shows it before saving.
Is my audio uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser.
