Image Rotator
Rotate images 90°, 180° or by any angle to straighten them, flip them, and fill or crop the corners. JPG, PNG, WebP; batch. Private.
Turn a sideways photo the right way up, straighten a tilted horizon, or mirror a picture. Choose one or more images and rotate them in quarter turns, or by any angle with the slider and fine buttons down to a tenth of a degree. A grid helps you line up horizons and buildings.
When a picture is rotated by an angle that isn't a multiple of 90°, its corners stick out: fill them with transparency, white, black or any colour, or crop them away automatically to the largest straight rectangle inside the picture. Phone photos are turned upright from their orientation tag first. Several images get the same rotation and download as a ZIP. All of it happens in your browser.
How to use Image Rotator
- Choose, drop or paste one or more images.
- Click 90° left, 90° right, 180° or a flip, or set any angle with the slider and the fine buttons.
- Choose how the corners are filled, or crop them away.
- Click Download; several images download as a ZIP.
Features
- Quarter turns: 90° left, 90° right and 180°.
- Any angle from −180° to 180° in steps of 0.1°.
- Flip horizontally (mirror) or vertically.
- Corners: transparent, white, black, any colour, or cropped away automatically.
- Grid overlay to straighten horizons and buildings.
- Phone photos are made upright from their EXIF orientation.
- Keeps JPG, PNG and WebP formats; PNG and WebP keep transparency.
- Batch rotation with a ZIP download; nothing is uploaded.
Straightening a tilted photo
Turn on the grid and move the slider until the horizon, a wall or a door frame runs parallel to a grid line. Small tilts are usually between 1° and 3°; use the −0.1° and +0.1° buttons for the last step. Then choose Crop them away to remove the empty corners: the tool keeps the largest upright rectangle that fits inside the rotated picture, so the result has no blank edges. The stronger the rotation, the more is cropped, as the table shows for a 4000 × 3000 photo.
| Rotation | Picture with corners filled | After cropping the corners |
|---|---|---|
| 1° | 4052 × 3069 pixels | 3949 × 2931 pixels |
| 2° | 4102 × 3138 pixels | 3902 × 2865 pixels |
| 5° | 4246 × 3337 pixels | 3780 × 2680 pixels |
| 45° | 4950 × 4950 pixels | 2121 × 2121 pixels |
Rotate or flip?
Rotating turns the picture around its centre, like turning a printed photo on a table. Flipping mirrors it: a horizontal flip swaps left and right, as in a mirror, which is useful for selfies taken with a front camera and for some printing processes; a vertical flip turns it upside down and mirrors it at the same time. Text in a flipped picture reads backwards, so check before you share.
Why phone photos sometimes appear sideways
Phones often save every photo in the same sensor orientation and add an orientation tag that tells viewers how to turn it. Some programs and websites ignore the tag and show the photo sideways. This tool applies the tag when it opens a photo, so you see it as it was taken, and saves the rotated pixels without the tag, so the result looks the same everywhere.
Quality
Quarter turns and flips move pixels without blending them. Rotating by other angles has to resample the picture, which softens it very slightly, so rotate the original rather than a copy that was already rotated. JPG and WebP results are saved at high quality (92); PNG is saved without loss. When the corners should be transparent, JPG pictures are saved as PNG, because JPG cannot store transparency.
Frequently asked questions
How do I rotate a picture 90 degrees?
Choose the picture, click 90° left or 90° right, and download it.
How do I straighten a crooked photo?
Turn on the grid, move the slider until the horizon is level, then choose Crop them away to remove the empty corners.
Is the image rotator free and private?
Yes. It is free and your images are processed in your browser; they are never uploaded.
Can I rotate many images at once?
Yes. Choose several images; they all get the same rotation and download as one ZIP.
How do I mirror an image?
Click Flip horizontal. Flip vertical turns the picture upside down as a mirror image.
Why did my JPG become a PNG?
You chose transparent corners, which JPG cannot store. Choose white or a colour for the corners to keep JPG.
Does rotating reduce quality?
Quarter turns and flips don't. Other angles resample the picture, which softens it very slightly.
