What is lorem ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin used as placeholder text in printing and design since at least the 1500s, when a printer used it to show off a type specimen. It comes from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a book on ethics written by Cicero in 45 BC; the familiar words dolorem ipsum mean pain itself. The text was cut and altered so it no longer reads as real Latin. Because its letters and word lengths resemble normal writing but the words mean nothing, readers focus on the layout, the fonts and the spacing instead of the content.

Plain text or HTML
Plain text is right for design tools such as Figma, Canva, Word or InDesign: paragraphs are separated by a blank line and list items start with a bullet or a number. Turn on HTML tags when you are building a web page: each paragraph is wrapped in a p element, and list items come inside a ul or ol list with li elements, ready to paste into your HTML, a CMS code view or a component.
Placeholder text best practice
Lorem ipsum is ideal early in a project, but replace it with real content before launch, and ideally before final design decisions, because real headlines and descriptions are often much longer or shorter than the filler. Search engines treat lorem ipsum as low-quality content, so never publish a page that still contains it; search your site for the words lorem ipsum before going live. For screen-reader and translation testing, use real sentences in the target language instead.
Why the text changes each time
Apart from the optional classic first sentence, the words are picked at random from the traditional lorem ipsum vocabulary, with random sentence and paragraph lengths, so repeated blocks don't look identical in a layout. Click Generate again to get a new variation with the same settings.
