Edit PDF

Edit a PDF online: change the existing text, add new text and images, white out anything. Free, private, nothing is uploaded.

Edit a PDF the way you would edit a document: click a sentence, a name, a date or a price, type the new words, and save. This free online PDF editor changes the text that is already in the file, so you can fix a typo in a letter, update the figures in an invoice, or correct an address without asking for the original Word file.

You can also add new text anywhere on a page, place an image such as a logo, a signature or a stamp, and white out anything that should disappear. Every change can be moved, resized, restyled or taken back with Undo before you save.

Your PDF never leaves your device: the editor runs entirely in your browser. There is no upload, no account and no watermark on the result.

How to use Edit PDF

  1. Choose or drop the PDF you want to edit. Its first page appears large, with arrows to move between pages.
  2. Keep Edit text selected and click the text you want to change. Type the new words in the Text box; the page shows them at once.
  3. Change the font, size, bold, italic or colour if you like. Clear the text completely to remove it from the page.
  4. Use Add text to place new text, Add image to put a picture on the page, or White out to cover something with white.
  5. Drag added text, images and white-outs to move them, and use the corner handle to resize them. Undo takes back the last change.
  6. Press Save edited PDF and download the new file. The original file is not changed.

Features

  • Change the existing text of a PDF: click it, type, done
  • Edited text is really replaced in the file, so copying and searching find the new words
  • Matching standard fonts in sans serif, serif and monospace, with bold and italic
  • Text colour and background are picked up from the page, so edits blend in
  • Add new text anywhere, on one line or several
  • Add images: logos, signatures, stamps and photos in PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF or BMP
  • White out areas to hide them, in white or any colour
  • Move and resize every addition, and undo any change
  • Works on every page, including rotated pages
  • Each saved page is checked, and anything that cannot be replaced safely is covered instead
  • Runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded
  • Free, with no account, no limits and no watermark

Change the text that is already in a PDF

Most free PDF tools let you add things on top of a page, but not change what is already written. Here every piece of text on the page becomes clickable: move the pointer over the page and the editable text is outlined. Click a line, a word in a table cell or a heading, and its words appear in the Text box above the page, ready to change.

When you save, the editor takes the old words out of the page and writes the new ones in their place, at the same position and size, in the closest standard font: sans serif for fonts like Arial or Helvetica, serif for fonts like Times, and monospace for typewriter fonts. The colour of the text is kept, so a blue link stays blue and a grey footnote stays grey. Because the old words are really replaced, a person who copies the text or searches the saved PDF finds your corrected version.

Add text, images and white-outs

Choose Add text and click anywhere on a page to place new text: a note in the margin, a missing line in a form, a reference number or a date. Type it in the Text box; pressing Enter starts a new line. Choose the font, the size, bold or italic and the colour, then drag the text into place.

Add image puts a picture on the current page: your company logo on a letter, a scanned signature at the bottom of a contract, a photo in a document or a stamp on a delivery note. It appears in the middle of the page at a sensible size; drag it and resize it with the corner handle, and it keeps its proportions. PNG images keep their transparent background.

White out covers an area with a solid colour, white by default, just like correction fluid on paper. Use it to hide an old phone number, a mistake in a scanned page or a field that should stay empty.

How the editor keeps your PDF looking right

A PDF is not a word processor file: each line of text is placed at an exact position, often in a font that is only partly stored in the file. That is why changing a PDF is harder than changing a document, and why many editors produce misplaced or garbled text.

This editor works line by line and checks its own work. After saving, it reads every page it changed again and compares the result with what you asked for: the lines you edited must show your new words, and every other line must be exactly as it was. If a page does not pass this check, for example because its text is stored in an unusual way, the editor saves that page with the old line covered in the page's own background colour and your new text on top. The page looks the same either way, and the download message tells you if any edit was covered rather than replaced.

Good to know

New and changed text is written with the standard PDF fonts, which cover English and the other Western European languages. Characters they cannot show, such as Hindi, Arabic, Chinese or emoji, are replaced by a question mark, and the download message lists them. The original font of a document is not reused, because most PDFs only contain the letters they already use.

Scanned pages are pictures of paper: they have no text to click. Use White out and Add text on them, or first make the text readable with the PDF OCR tool. To hide sensitive information so that it can never be recovered, use Redact PDF, which removes it permanently. To fill in an existing form, Fill PDF Form is the quicker choice.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF editor really free?

Yes. It is free to use, with no account, no limit on the number of files and no watermark added to your PDF.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The editor runs in your browser, so the PDF, your changes and the saved file stay on your device.

Can I change the existing text in a PDF?

Yes. Click the text on the page, type the new words in the Text box and save. The old words are taken out of the page and the new ones are written in their place.

Will the edited text look the same as the original?

It keeps the position, size and colour, and uses the closest standard font: sans serif, serif or monospace, with bold and italic. Documents in an unusual font may look slightly different on the edited lines.

Can I add an image or a signature to a PDF?

Yes. Press Add image, choose a PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF or BMP picture, then drag and resize it on the page. For a signature drawn or typed on screen, Sign PDF offers more options.

Why can I not click the text on my PDF?

The page is probably a scan or a picture, so it has no text to edit. You can still white out parts of it and add new text on top, or run PDF OCR first to make the text readable.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Tap the text you want to change, type in the Text box, and drag added text or images with your finger.
