Passport Photo Maker
Make passport and visa photos at home: India, US, UK, Schengen and more sizes, head-size guides, white background, 300 dpi photo or print sheet.
Turn any well-lit photo of your face into a passport or visa photo of the correct size. Pick your document, such as an Indian passport, a US passport or a Schengen visa, then drag and zoom the photo until your head fits between the two guide lines. Replace the background with plain white or a light colour with one click, and download a sharp 300 dpi photo.
To print at home or at a photo shop, download a print sheet: several copies on one 4 × 6 inch print or one A4 page, with thin lines for cutting. Everything runs in your browser, so your photo is never uploaded.
How to use Passport Photo Maker
- Take a photo facing the camera, with even light and a plain background.
- Choose the photo and select your document size.
- Drag and zoom so the top of the head and the chin touch the guide lines; replace the background if needed.
- Download a single photo or a print sheet and print it at 100% size.
Features
- Sizes for India, US, UK, Schengen, Canada, Australia, China and Japan, or a custom size
- Guide lines for the head size each document requires
- White, light grey or light blue background, made with AI in your browser
- Straighten, zoom and brightness controls
- 300 dpi JPG, or a 4 × 6 in or A4 sheet with cut lines
- Photos are never uploaded
Passport and visa photo sizes
Each document has its own photo size and its own rule for how large the head must be, measured from the chin to the top of the hair. The guide lines in the editor follow these ranges. Rules change from time to time, so always check the latest requirements of the office that issues your document.
| Document | Photo size | Head height |
|---|---|---|
| India passport | 35 × 45 mm | 70–80% of the height |
| India visa / OCI | 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm) | 50–69% of the height |
| US passport and visa | 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm) | 50–69% of the height |
| UK passport | 35 × 45 mm | 64–76% of the height |
| Schengen visa, EU passports | 35 × 45 mm | 71–80% of the height |
| Canada passport | 50 × 70 mm | 44–51% of the height |
| Australia passport | 35 × 45 mm | 71–80% of the height |
| China visa | 33 × 48 mm | 58–69% of the height |
| Japan passport | 35 × 45 mm | 71–80% of the height |
Taking a good passport photo at home
Stand about a metre in front of a plain, light wall and ask someone to take the photo at eye level, holding the phone upright. Face the camera directly with a neutral expression, eyes open and mouth closed. Remove glasses, hats and anything that covers your face unless worn for religious or medical reasons.
Use soft, even daylight from the front, and avoid shadows on your face or on the wall behind you. Take several photos and choose the sharpest one; you can straighten a slight tilt with the Straighten slider.
Replacing the background
Most passports and visas need a plain white or light background. If your wall is not plain, choose White, Light grey or Light blue: an AI model finds the person in your photo and replaces everything else. The model runs inside your browser and is downloaded once, about 4.4 MB.
Hair edges are the hardest part. Check the result closely at full size, and if the edges look rough, retake the photo in front of a plain light wall and keep the original background instead.
Printing the photos
Download a 4 × 6 inch sheet to print at a photo shop or on a photo printer: it holds 8 photos of 35 × 45 mm or 6 photos of 2 × 2 inches. The A4 sheet holds 36 photos of 35 × 45 mm. Always print at 100% or actual size, never with fit to page, otherwise the photos come out smaller than required. Cut along the thin grey lines.
For online applications, such as passport and visa portals, upload the single photo. If the portal asks for a smaller file or specific pixel dimensions, use the image resizer or compressor afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Indian passport photo size?
35 × 45 mm (3.5 × 4.5 cm), with a plain white background and the face covering most of the photo. Check the latest Passport Seva guidelines before you submit.
What size is a US passport photo?
2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head between 1 and 1 3/8 inches from chin to top of hair.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Cropping, background replacement and the print sheet are all made in your browser.
How many photos fit on a 4 × 6 print?
8 photos of 35 × 45 mm or 6 photos of 2 × 2 inches, placed edge to edge with thin cut lines.
Will the photo be accepted?
The tool gives you the right size and head proportions, but acceptance also depends on lighting, expression and image quality. Always check the official rules of your document.
Why print at 100%?
Printers often shrink images to fit the page. At 100% or actual size, each photo comes out exactly the required size.
Can I use a phone selfie?
Yes, but ask someone else to take it at eye level and arm's length or more; selfies held close distort the face.
