ZIP Extractor
Open ZIP files in your browser: see the files and folders inside, extract one file or everything, including password-protected ZIPs.
Open a ZIP file without installing anything — on a computer, a Chromebook, a tablet or a phone. The ZIP Extractor shows every file and folder inside the archive with its size, lets you filter the list by name, and extracts a single file with one click or everything at once. Password-protected ZIP files are supported: enter the password and extract as usual.
The archive is opened by libarchive, the open-source library behind the archive support of many operating systems, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs inside your browser. Your ZIP is never uploaded. Before anything is extracted, the archive is checked by its content and against “zip bombs” — tiny archives that would expand to enormous sizes — and unsafe paths are cleaned so files can only land where you save them.
How to use ZIP Extractor
- Choose or drop a ZIP file.
- Browse the list of files and folders, or type in the filter to find a file.
- If the ZIP is password-protected, enter the password.
- Download a single file, or Download all as ZIP to get everything in one go.
Features
- Lists every file and folder with sizes.
- Extract one file or all files.
- Filter by name to find files in large archives.
- Password-protected ZIP files (supported encryption methods).
- Checks the file by its content; refuses zip bombs and unsafe paths.
- Runs in your browser with libarchive (WebAssembly): no upload.
How it works
A ZIP file is a container of compressed files with a table of contents at the end. The extractor reads that table first to list the files without unpacking them, so even large archives open quickly. When you download a file, only that file is decompressed. Download all extracts every file and packs them into a new, uncompressed ZIP with the same folder structure, which your computer can open instantly — useful on phones and tablets where saving many separate files is awkward.
| Limit | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Archive size | Up to 1 GB | The archive is read into the browser's memory |
| Unpacked size | Up to 2 GB in total | Everything extracted must fit in memory |
| Number of files | Up to 20,000 | Keeps the list responsive |
Protection against harmful archives
A “zip bomb” is a small archive built to unpack into gigabytes and freeze or crash the program that opens it. The extractor refuses archives whose declared unpacked size is far out of proportion to their own size, and also checks the real size of every file as it is extracted, so a lying archive is stopped. A second trick, “zip slip”, uses names such as ../../file to escape the destination folder; the extractor removes such parts from every path, as well as drive letters and characters that are not allowed in file names.
Password-protected ZIP files
If the archive contains encrypted files, a password box appears. Enter the password, then download a file to check it; if the password is wrong, the extractor tells you instead of producing a broken file. The password is used only in your browser and is never stored or sent. Most ZIP encryption methods are supported; if a file can't be decrypted, your archive may use a method the browser version of libarchive doesn't include.
ZIP, 7Z and RAR
Every file is checked by its content, not its name. If you open a 7-Zip or RAR archive that was renamed to .zip, the extractor tells you what it really is and which tool opens it — the 7Z Extractor or the RAR Extractor, which work the same way. To create a ZIP from your own files, use the ZIP Creator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I unzip a file online?
Choose or drop the ZIP file, then download the files you need, or Download all to get everything.
Is my ZIP file uploaded?
No. The archive is opened in your browser and never leaves your device.
Can I open password-protected ZIP files?
Yes. Enter the password when asked. It stays in your browser.
Can I extract just one file?
Yes. Each file has its own Download button, and only that file is decompressed.
How large can the ZIP be?
Up to 1 GB, unpacking to at most 2 GB, with up to 20,000 files.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, in current mobile browsers. Download all gives you one file that's easy to save.
What is a zip bomb?
A tiny archive designed to unpack into an enormous amount of data. The extractor detects and refuses them.
