Video Frame Extractor
Save frames from a video as JPG, PNG or WebP: the frame on screen, one every few seconds, or a set number spread evenly. ZIP download.
Open a video and save still images from it. Pause on the exact moment you want and grab that frame in full resolution, take one image every few seconds to get an overview, or ask for a number of frames spread evenly across the whole video. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP and full, half or quarter size, then save single frames from the thumbnail grid or download them all as a ZIP file.
Frames are decoded directly from the video file, so they are sharper than a screenshot of the player and keep the video's real resolution. Everything happens in your browser; the video is never uploaded.
How to use Video Frame Extractor
- Choose or drop a video.
- Choose the frame on screen, one every N seconds, or a number of frames.
- Pick the image format and size.
- Press Extract frames, then save single images or the ZIP.
Features
- Exact frame at the current player position
- Frames at a regular interval or evenly spaced
- JPG, PNG or WebP at full, half or quarter size
- Thumbnail grid with single downloads
- ZIP of up to 500 frames
- Runs in your browser; the video stays on your device
Ways to pick frames
The three modes cover the usual needs.
| Mode | Good for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| The frame on screen | One perfect moment, a thumbnail, a still for a post | Pause at 1:23.4 and extract |
| One every N seconds | Reviewing a recording, storyboards, time-lapse sets | Every 5 seconds of a 2-minute clip gives 24 images |
| A number of frames | Contact sheets and previews spread over the whole video | 12 frames from any length |
Which image format?
JPG gives small files and suits photos and most video frames. PNG is lossless, so it keeps every pixel exactly, which is best for screen recordings with text, frames you will edit further, or training data; the files are much larger. WebP is smaller than JPG at the same quality and is supported by all current browsers and most apps. Choose half or quarter size for previews and contact sheets to save space.
Getting the sharpest frame
Video frames that show fast movement can be blurred because of the camera's shutter speed, not the extraction. Step through the video with the player and pick a moment where the subject is still. Frames from highly compressed videos, such as downloads from social networks, may show blocky areas in dark or detailed scenes; the original recording from the camera or phone gives better stills. Each extracted file name includes the time of the frame, so you can find it again in the video.
Privacy and limits
The video is read by your own browser using its built-in video decoder, so private and work videos never leave your device. Up to 500 frames are extracted at a time; for long videos choose a longer interval. Very large videos work best in Chrome or Edge on a computer. Videos in H.265 (HEVC) from iPhones need a browser that can decode HEVC.
Uses for extracted frames
Creators pick a striking frame as a YouTube thumbnail or a cover image for a social post. Teachers and trainers turn a recorded lesson into a set of slides or a step-by-step handout. Sports coaches and dancers study a movement frame by frame. Researchers and machine learning engineers sample frames from footage to label or analyse, where evenly spaced frames give a fair picture of the whole video. Security and dashcam footage can be reviewed quickly with one frame every few seconds, and the time in each file name tells you where to look in the original video.
Frequently asked questions
How do I save a frame from a video as a picture?
Open the video, pause on the moment you want, keep The frame on screen selected and press Extract frames.
Are the frames full quality?
Yes. With Full size the image has the video's real resolution, and PNG keeps it without any further compression.
How do I get one image per second?
Choose One every N seconds and enter 1. A one-minute video gives 60 images.
Which video formats work?
MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV with H.264, VP8, VP9 or AV1 video in any current browser, and H.265 where the browser supports it.
How many frames can I extract?
Up to 500 at once. Use a longer interval or fewer frames for long videos.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Frames are extracted in your browser.
