GIF to Video
Convert an animated GIF to an MP4 video — much smaller, accepted everywhere — keeping each frame's timing, with optional repeats.
Animated GIFs are everywhere, but the format is from the 1980s: files are large, colours are limited, and many places that accept video do not accept GIFs — Instagram, WhatsApp status, TikTok, many messengers and some slide tools. Converting a GIF to MP4 typically makes it many times smaller with the same look, and lets you post it anywhere video is welcome.
This converter reads every frame of the GIF with its own timing and encodes them as an H.264 MP4 video. Because videos usually play once while GIFs loop, you can repeat the animation two, three or five times in the video. Transparent areas are filled with white or black. Everything happens in your browser — the GIF is never uploaded.
How to use GIF to Video
- Choose or drop an animated GIF.
- Choose how many times the animation should play.
- Choose white or black for transparent areas.
- Press Convert to video and download the MP4.
Features
- Animated GIF to MP4 (H.264), or WebM where needed.
- Keeps each frame's own display time.
- Repeat the animation 2, 3 or 5 times.
- White or black background for transparency.
- Shows frames, size and length before converting.
- Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Common uses
Post a reaction GIF or meme on Instagram or as a WhatsApp status, add an animation to a PowerPoint or Google Slides deck as a video, share a screen-capture GIF in a chat app that compresses GIFs badly, or shrink an animation for a website where a small autoplaying, muted MP4 loads faster than the GIF.
Why convert GIFs to video
GIF stores every frame as a separate picture with at most 256 colours and simple compression, so even short animations can be several megabytes. Video codecs such as H.264 store only the changes between frames and are far more efficient, so the same animation as an MP4 is usually a fraction of the size and loads faster. Many social networks convert uploaded GIFs to video anyway; doing it yourself gives you control over the result and avoids upload limits on GIF size.
Timing, loops and transparency
Each GIF frame has its own delay, and the converter keeps them, so slow and fast parts of an animation stay as they were. Very short delays of 10 milliseconds or less are played at 100 milliseconds, which is what browsers do, so the video matches what you see in a browser. Videos do not loop on their own in most apps, so choose how many times to repeat the animation. Video formats such as MP4 have no transparency; transparent parts of the GIF are filled with the background colour you choose.
| GIF | MP4 video |
|---|---|
| Loops forever in browsers | Plays once, or the number of times you choose |
| Up to 256 colours per frame | Millions of colours |
| Transparency supported | Filled with white or black |
| Large files | Usually many times smaller |
Limits
GIFs up to 100 MB and 5,000 frames can be converted. Very large GIFs are scaled down so the longer side is at most 3840 pixels, and odd sizes are rounded to even numbers, which video encoders require. Decoding GIF frames uses the browser's ImageDecoder feature, available in current versions of Chrome, Edge and Firefox; other browsers show a message. To go the other way and make a GIF from a video clip, use Video to GIF.
Private and quick
The GIF is decoded and encoded on your device with your browser's built-in video encoder, so it never leaves your computer or phone. Conversion usually takes a few seconds. You can cancel a long conversion at any time.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert a GIF to MP4 on my phone?
Yes, in a current mobile version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox; the video saves to your downloads.
Why is the video longer than one loop?
You chose more than one repeat; choose Once for a single play-through.
How do I convert a GIF to MP4?
Open the GIF, choose the repeats and background, and press Convert to video.
Will the MP4 be smaller than the GIF?
Usually much smaller, because video compression is far more efficient.
Does the video loop?
Most players play it once. Choose 2×, 3× or 5× to repeat the animation in the video.
What happens to transparent areas?
They are filled with white or black, because MP4 has no transparency.
Can I post the result on Instagram?
Yes. The MP4 works on Instagram, WhatsApp, X, TikTok and most other apps.
Is my GIF uploaded?
No. Conversion happens in your browser.
