Random Bytes Generator
Generate cryptographically secure random bytes for keys, salts, nonces and tokens — as hex, Base64, Base64url, byte arrays or a file.
Encryption keys, password salts, nonces, API secrets, session tokens and test fixtures all need random data that nobody can predict. Ordinary random number functions such as Math.random are not good enough for this: their output can be guessed. This generator uses crypto.getRandomValues, the cryptographically secure random number generator built into every modern browser and backed by the operating system.
Choose how many bytes you need — 16 for a 128-bit value, 32 for 256 bits, 64 for 512 bits, or any size — and how many values to create, then copy them as lowercase or uppercase hex, Base64, URL-safe Base64url, a byte array ready to paste into code, or binary digits, or download them as a raw .bin file. The values are made on your device and never stored or sent anywhere.
How to use Random Bytes Generator
- Choose the number of bytes, or press a preset such as 32 (256-bit).
- Choose how many values to generate.
- Choose the output format.
- Copy the values, download them, or press Generate new.
Features
- Cryptographically secure randomness (crypto.getRandomValues).
- Any size from 1 byte up to 1 MB.
- Up to 100 values at once.
- Hex, HEX, Base64, Base64url, byte array or binary.
- Download as text or as a raw .bin file.
- Runs in your browser; nothing is stored or sent.
How many bytes do I need?
The number of random bytes sets how hard a value is to guess: each byte adds 8 bits of entropy. These sizes cover most uses.
| Use | Bytes | Bits |
|---|---|---|
| Password salt, UUID-sized ID | 16 | 128 |
| AES-256 key, HMAC-SHA-256 secret, API token | 32 | 256 |
| AES-GCM nonce (IV) | 12 | 96 |
| HMAC-SHA-512 secret, signing seed | 64 | 512 |
| Session ID, CSRF token | 16–32 | 128–256 |
Choosing a format
Hex uses two characters per byte and is the most common way to write keys in configuration files and documentation. Base64 is about a third shorter and is used in JSON, HTTP headers and many APIs. Base64url replaces + and / with - and _ and drops padding, so values can be used safely in URLs, file names and JSON Web Tokens. The byte array format writes values like 0x1f, ready to paste into C, Rust, Go or JavaScript source code. Binary shows each byte as eight 0s and 1s, which is mostly useful for teaching.
Why browser randomness is secure
crypto.getRandomValues is defined by the Web Cryptography standard to return cryptographically strong values. Browsers fill it from the operating system's generator — the same source used for TLS keys — which is seeded from hardware events and, on modern processors, dedicated hardware random number instructions. Values are generated locally, never fetched from a server, so nobody else ever sees them, and they are not kept after you close the page.
Good practice with secrets
Generate a new value for each purpose rather than reusing one key everywhere. Store secrets in a password manager or a secrets vault, not in source code or chat messages. A nonce for AES-GCM must never be reused with the same key — generate a fresh one for every message. Remember that hex and Base64 are just ways of writing the same bytes: a 32-byte key is 64 hex characters or 44 Base64 characters, but it is still 256 bits of randomness.

For passwords people type, use the Password Generator; for short numeric codes, the PIN Generator; for API keys with prefixes, the API Key Generator; and for unique identifiers, the UUID Generator. To turn a password into a key, use the PBKDF2 Generator, and to encrypt text or files with a password, use AES Encryption.
Frequently asked questions
How do I generate a random 256-bit key?
Choose 32 bytes and copy the hex or Base64 value.
Is the randomness secure?
Yes. It comes from crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographically secure generator.
What is the difference between Base64 and Base64url?
Base64url uses - and _ instead of + and / and no padding, so it is safe in URLs and file names.
Can I generate many values at once?
Yes, up to 100 values per batch.
How large can a value be?
Up to 1 MB in total.
Are the values stored or sent anywhere?
No. They are generated in your browser and forgotten when you leave.
Can I download the bytes as a binary file?
Yes. Use Download as .bin file.
