Word Counter
Count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs as you type, with reading time, keyword density and character limits for X, SMS and SEO.
Paste or type your text and the counts update instantly: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and unique words, plus how long the text takes to read and to say out loud. A keyword density list shows the words you use most, and the limit checker tells you how many characters you have left for an X post, a meta description, an SMS or an Instagram caption.
Words are counted with your browser's language rules, so English, Spanish, Hindi, Chinese and Japanese are all counted correctly. Your text stays on your device.
How to use Word Counter
- Type or paste your text, or open a .txt file. The counts update as you type.
- Read words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, unique words, reading time and speaking time on the right.
- Choose a character limit (for example X post or meta description) to see how many characters are left.
- Check the keyword density list to spot overused words.
Features
- Live word, character, sentence and paragraph counts.
- Characters with and without spaces; emoji and accented letters count as one character.
- Unique words and average word length.
- Reading time (238 words per minute) and speaking time (140 words per minute).
- Keyword density: top 10 words, without common words such as “the” and “and”.
- Character limit checker for X / Twitter, meta descriptions, page titles, SMS, LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube.
- Correct counts for every language, including Hindi, Chinese and Japanese.
- Private: nothing is uploaded or saved.
How words and characters are counted
A word is a run of letters or digits, so “don't”, “e-mail” and “2024” each count as one word, while punctuation and emoji do not count as words. For languages written without spaces, such as Chinese, Japanese and Thai, the counter uses your browser's built-in word segmentation instead of looking for spaces.
Characters are counted as you see them: an emoji, an accented letter or a Hindi letter with its vowel sign counts once. “Characters (no spaces)” leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks.
Character limits on popular platforms
Pick a limit in the tool to see how much room you have left as you type.
| Where | Limit | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| X (Twitter) post | 280 characters | Links count as 23 characters |
| Meta description | about 155–160 characters | Longer ones are cut off in Google results |
| Page title (SEO) | about 50–60 characters | Put the main keyword first |
| SMS | 160 characters | Emoji or non-Latin letters lower it to 70 |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 characters | Only the first ~125 show without “more” |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 characters | About 210 show before “see more” |
| YouTube title | 100 characters | About 70 are visible in search |
How long is … words?
Typical lengths for common pieces of writing, and the reading time at 238 words per minute.
| Text | Words | Pages (single-spaced) | Reading time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tweet-length note | 40–50 | — | about 10 sec |
| Short email | 100–200 | less than half | under 1 min |
| Essay | 500 | 1 | about 2 min |
| Blog post | 1,000–1,500 | 2–3 | 4–6 min |
| Long-form article | 2,000+ | 4+ | 8+ min |
What is keyword density?
Keyword density is how often a word appears compared with the total number of words, as a percentage. Writers use it to check that the main topic is mentioned enough — and that no word is repeated so often that the text reads badly. Search engines no longer reward a particular density, so write naturally: if one word is far above the rest, try a synonym.
Frequently asked questions
Is this word counter free and private?
Yes. It is free with no usage limits, and your text is counted in your browser — it is never uploaded or stored.
Does it count characters with or without spaces?
Both. “Characters” includes spaces and line breaks; “Characters (no spaces)” leaves them out. Most social networks count with spaces.
How is reading time calculated?
By dividing the word count by 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed of adults in English. Speaking time uses 140 words per minute, a typical pace for presentations.
Does it work for Hindi, Chinese or Japanese?
Yes. Words are found with your browser's language-aware word segmentation, so languages without spaces between words are counted properly, and combined letters count as one character.
Why is my count different from Microsoft Word or Google Docs?
Tools differ slightly in how they treat hyphenated words, numbers, URLs and symbols. The difference is usually less than 1%. This counter treats a hyphenated word as one word and does not count stand-alone symbols or emoji as words.
Can I count words in a file?
Yes — click “Open file” to load a .txt or .md file, or drop it onto the text box. For Word or PDF documents, copy the text and paste it in.
What counts as a sentence and a paragraph?
A sentence ends with . ! or ? (or the equivalent in other languages). A paragraph is a block of text separated by an empty line.
