Voice Recorder

Record your voice from the microphone in the browser, with a level meter, pause and resume — play it back and save as MP3, WAV or as recorded.

Record your voice straight from the browser: press Start recording, speak, and press Stop. A level meter shows the microphone is picking you up, a timer shows the length, and you can pause and resume as often as you like. Every recording appears in a list where you can play it back and download it.

Save a recording exactly as your browser recorded it, or convert it to MP3 for sharing and messaging apps, or to WAV for editing software. The recording and the conversion both happen on your device, so nothing is uploaded and there is no sign-up.

How to use Voice Recorder

  1. Choose your microphone and keep noise reduction on for speech.
  2. Press Start recording and allow microphone access when the browser asks.
  3. Speak; use Pause and Resume if you need a break, then press Stop.
  4. Play the recording, pick MP3, WAV or the original format, and press Download.

Features

  • Records from any microphone your device has, including headsets
  • Live level meter and timer
  • Pause and resume without starting a new file
  • Echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain from your browser
  • Save as MP3, WAV or as recorded (WebM, OGG or M4A)
  • Several recordings in one session, each with its own player

Which format should I save?

Browsers record compressed audio: Chrome, Edge and Firefox record Opus in a WebM or OGG file, Safari records AAC in an M4A file. Saving as recorded is instant and keeps the size small, but some older players and apps do not open WebM files.

MP3 plays everywhere, from phones and car stereos to WhatsApp and email, so it is the safest choice for sharing. WAV is uncompressed and much larger, which suits editing software such as Audacity or a video editor where you will process the sound further.

Getting good sound

Record in a quiet room and keep the microphone at a steady distance, about a hand's width from your mouth for a headset or laptop microphone. Watch the level meter: it should move clearly when you speak but not stay at the very end, which means the sound is too loud and may distort.

Noise reduction is on by default and removes steady background noise such as fans, which is ideal for voice notes, lectures and calls. Turn it off for music or singing, because it can make instruments sound thin or cut quiet notes.

Microphone permission

The first time you record, the browser asks whether this site may use your microphone. Choose Allow. If you clicked Block by mistake, click the lock or settings icon in the address bar, allow the microphone and reload the page. On phones, the browser app itself may also need microphone permission in the system settings.

The microphone is only active while you record; the browser shows a recording indicator during that time and stops it when you press Stop.

Privacy

Recordings are created by your browser and kept in this page's memory until you close it. They are not uploaded or stored on a server. Download every recording you want to keep before you close or reload the page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the voice recorder free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark. A single recording can be up to 3 hours long.

Are my recordings uploaded?

No. Recording and converting both happen in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.

Can I save the recording as MP3?

Yes. Choose MP3 next to the recording and press Download; the conversion runs on your device.

Why does my browser ask for microphone access?

Browsers never let websites use the microphone without your permission. Allow it to record; you can withdraw it at any time in the site settings.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on Android and iPhone.

Why is the WAV file so big?

WAV is uncompressed. Use MP3 for sharing; use WAV only for editing software.

What happens if I close the page?

Recordings that you have not downloaded are lost, because nothing is stored on a server. Download them first.
