SIP Calculator

Calculate the maturity value of a monthly SIP in mutual funds: total invested, estimated returns, optional yearly step-up, chart and yearly table.

Enter how much you plan to invest every month, the return you expect and for how many years, and the SIP calculator shows what your investment may be worth at the end: the total you put in, the estimated gain and the maturity value. A chart and a year-by-year table show how the money grows, and you can download the table as a CSV file.

A systematic investment plan, or SIP, invests a fixed amount in a mutual fund every month. Because each instalment keeps growing for the rest of the period, small regular amounts can become a large sum over ten or twenty years. The optional step-up shows the effect of raising your SIP every year as your income grows.

How to use SIP Calculator

  1. Enter the monthly SIP amount.
  2. Enter the return you expect per year, for example 12% for an equity fund over the long term.
  3. Choose the number of years you plan to stay invested.
  4. Optionally add a yearly step-up, then read the maturity value, the chart and the table.

Features

  • Maturity value, total invested and estimated returns
  • Optional yearly step-up of the SIP amount
  • Growth chart of invested money and returns
  • Year-by-year table with CSV download
  • Amounts in rupees with Indian grouping (lakh, crore)
  • Runs in your browser; nothing is stored or sent

How the SIP value is calculated

Each instalment is invested at the start of the month and grows at a monthly rate equal to the annual return divided by 12. For a fixed SIP this gives the standard formula used by fund houses: maturity value = P × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i), where P is the monthly amount, i the monthly rate and n the number of months.

For example, ₹5,000 a month for 10 years at 12% a year means 120 instalments and ₹6,00,000 invested. The calculator shows a maturity value of about ₹11,61,695, so the estimated return is about ₹5,61,695.

The power of time and step-up

Doubling the period from 10 to 20 years doubles the money you invest but more than quadruples the maturity value in the example above, because the early instalments keep compounding for longer. Starting early matters more than starting big.

A step-up SIP raises the instalment every year, for example by 10% when your salary rises. Starting at ₹5,000 with a 10% yearly step-up for 10 years invests ₹9,56,245 and may grow to about ₹16,87,163, much more than a fixed SIP of the same starting amount.

What return should I expect?

Mutual fund returns are not fixed and change from year to year. Many people use about 12% a year for diversified equity funds over long periods, 7 to 8% for debt funds and a lower figure for conservative plans, but past returns do not guarantee future returns. Try a few rates to see a range of outcomes rather than relying on one number.

The result is before tax. Gains on equity funds held for more than a year are taxed as long-term capital gains above the yearly exemption, and expense ratios and exit loads also reduce the actual return.

SIP or lump sum?

A SIP spreads your investment over time, so you buy more units when prices are low and fewer when they are high. This rupee-cost averaging reduces the risk of investing everything just before a fall, and it builds a habit of saving every month. A lump sum invested at the start can earn more when markets rise steadily, but it takes more nerve and requires having the money up front.

Frequently asked questions

How is SIP maturity value calculated?

With the formula P × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i): P is the monthly SIP, i the monthly rate (annual return ÷ 12) and n the number of months. Each instalment is assumed to be invested at the start of the month.

How much will ₹5,000 a month become in 10 years?

At an assumed 12% a year, about ₹11,61,695 from ₹6,00,000 invested. At other rates the result changes considerably, so try a few.

What is a step-up SIP?

A SIP whose amount increases every year by a fixed percentage, for example 10%. It lets your investment grow with your income.

Are SIP returns guaranteed?

No. Mutual fund returns depend on the market. The calculator assumes the same return every year to show what is possible.

Does the calculator include tax?

No. Results are before capital gains tax, expense ratios and exit loads.

Is my data saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is stored or sent.
