Document Metadata Cleaner
Remove author, company, editing time, dates and custom properties from Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OpenDocument files before sharing.
Office documents quietly record who wrote them and how: the author's name, who last saved the file, the company and manager from the computer's settings, the template path, the total editing time, the revision number, creation and modification dates, keywords and any custom properties added by document management systems. Choose your Word, Excel, PowerPoint or OpenDocument files, see what each one contains, and save clean copies with all of that removed. You can keep the title if you want it to show in file viewers.
The content of the document is not changed in any way. The tool also points out hidden content it cannot safely remove for you, such as comments, tracked changes, speaker notes and hidden sheets, so you can deal with them before sharing.
How to use Document Metadata Cleaner
- Choose or drop DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, ODT, ODS or ODP files.
- Review the properties found and any warnings about hidden content.
- Choose whether to keep the document title.
- Press Remove metadata and download the clean files.
Features
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OpenDocument files
- Removes author, last modified by, company, manager and template
- Removes dates, revision, editing time and custom properties
- Option to keep the title
- Warns about comments, tracked changes, notes and hidden sheets
- Content unchanged; nothing uploaded
What is removed
The tool rewrites only the parts of the file that hold document properties.
| Property | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Author, last modified by | The user name in Office or the operating system |
| Company, manager | Office or Windows registration details |
| Template | The path of the template, which can reveal folder and user names |
| Total editing time, revision | How long and how often the file was edited |
| Created, modified, last printed | Dates stored inside the file, separate from the file system dates |
| Title, subject, keywords, comments field, category | Entered in File → Info → Properties |
| Custom properties | Added by document management, SharePoint or templates |
What you still need to check
Some information is part of the document content rather than its properties, so removing it automatically could change the document. Comments and the names of their authors, tracked changes with the reviewers' names, speaker notes in presentations, hidden slides, hidden or very hidden sheets in workbooks, hidden text, and embedded files all stay. The tool lists what it finds. In Word, use Review → Delete all comments and Review → Accept all changes; in PowerPoint delete the notes and comments; in Excel unhide and review all sheets. Microsoft Office's own File → Info → Check for issues → Inspect document can remove many of these as well.
Why clean metadata?
Documents sent to clients, published on websites or submitted in tenders, legal cases and job applications can reveal more than intended: the name of a colleague who drafted a proposal, the template from a competitor, a previous employer in the company field, or how many hours went into a quote. Journalists and researchers regularly find such details in published files. Cleaning the properties is a quick, low-risk step before any document leaves your organisation.
Other file types
For PDF files use the PDF Metadata Remover, which clears the author, creator and producer fields and XMP data. Photos carry EXIF data such as GPS location, which you can check with the EXIF Viewer, and audio files carry tags that the Audio Metadata Remover clears. Old .doc, .xls and .ppt files must be saved in the newer formats first.
A checklist before sending a document
Clean the properties with this tool, then open the clean copy and look through it once more: delete comments, accept or reject tracked changes, remove hidden text and speaker notes, unhide and check every sheet, and look for text in headers, footers and text boxes. Check that pictures do not show more than intended, and convert to PDF if the receiver only needs to read the document.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove the author name from a Word document?
Open the .docx here and press Remove metadata. The author and last modified by fields are removed from the clean copy.
Does it change the content of my document?
No. Only the property parts of the file are rewritten.
Does it remove comments and tracked changes?
No, because that would change the document. It warns you about them so you can delete comments and accept or reject changes in Word.
Which files are supported?
DOCX, DOCM, DOTX, XLSX, XLSM, XLTX, PPTX, PPTM, POTX, ODT, ODS and ODP.
Can I clean PDF files?
