Video Rotate
Rotate a video 90° left or right or 180°, or mirror it, to fix sideways and upside-down phone videos. Sound is kept.
Phones decide which way up a video is from how they are held when recording starts, and they often guess wrong: the video plays sideways, or upside down, on a computer, a TV or after sharing. Some players read the rotation flag in the file and others ignore it, so a video can look right on your phone and wrong everywhere else.
This tool turns the picture itself, so it plays the right way round in every player. Choose 90° right, 90° left or 180°, and optionally mirror the video left to right — useful for selfie recordings where text appears reversed. The preview shows the result before you save. The sound is kept, and everything happens in your browser: the video is never uploaded.
How to use Video Rotate
- Choose or drop a video (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV).
- Choose how to turn it: 90° right, 90° left or 180°.
- Turn on Mirror if the picture is reversed.
- Press Rotate video and download the result.
Features
- Rotate 90° clockwise, 90° anticlockwise or 180°.
- Mirror (flip left to right).
- Live preview of the turned video.
- Rotation written into the picture, so every player shows it right.
- Sound kept; MP4 (H.264) output.
- Runs in your browser with WebCodecs; nothing is uploaded.
Common situations
A video recorded with the phone held upright but started while it was flat on a table often comes out sideways. Videos from action cameras mounted upside down need a 180° turn. Screen recordings of a phone may need turning for a landscape presentation. Clips received through messaging apps can lose the rotation flag and appear sideways on a computer even though they looked right on the phone. In each case, one rotation fixes the file permanently, so you never have to rotate it again in a player or editor, and anyone you share it with sees it the right way up.
Which way to turn
Look at the preview and pick the turn that makes the picture upright. Turning by 90° swaps width and height, so a landscape video becomes portrait and the other way round.
| If the video looks | Choose |
|---|---|
| Lying on its left side (top of the picture on the left) | 90° right |
| Lying on its right side (top of the picture on the right) | 90° left |
| Upside down | 180° |
| The right way up but text reads backwards | No turn + Mirror |
Why rotation is written into the picture
Many tools rotate a video by only changing a flag in the file that tells players to turn it while playing. That is fast, but some players, editors, websites and older TVs ignore the flag, so the video still appears sideways. This tool re-encodes the frames already turned, so the picture is upright for every app. Re-encoding takes longer than changing a flag, and uses a high quality setting so the difference is not visible.
Mirroring
Front cameras often save a mirror image, so writing on a whiteboard or a T-shirt reads backwards. Turn on Mirror to flip the picture left to right; combine it with a turn if the video is also sideways. Mirroring is also useful for dance and fitness videos, where following a mirrored teacher is easier.
Quality and privacy
The rotated video is saved as H.264 MP4 at a quality suited to its size, using your device's video encoder. Videos the browser cannot decode, such as some HEVC files from iPhones on Windows without the HEVC extension, are explained with a message. Long videos take a while to process; you can cancel at any time. Nothing is uploaded, so personal recordings stay on your device. To also change the size or remove part of the picture, use the Video Resizer or the Video Cropper.
Frequently asked questions
How do I rotate a video?
Open the video, choose 90° right, 90° left or 180°, and press Rotate video.
Why is my phone video sideways on my computer?
The phone stored a rotation flag that some players ignore. Rotating here turns the picture itself.
Can I flip a video?
Yes. Turn on Mirror to flip it left to right.
Is the sound kept?
Yes.
Will rotating reduce the quality?
The video is re-encoded at a high quality setting, so the difference is not visible in normal viewing.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser.
