Currency Converter
Convert between 30 major currencies with the European Central Bank's daily reference rates. Shows the rate date and keeps the last rates for offline use.
Convert an amount from one currency to another with the official daily reference rates of the European Central Bank (ECB). Pick the two currencies, type the amount and see the result at once, with the exchange rate in both directions and the date of the rates. A table converts the same amount into your favourite currencies; add or remove currencies to suit you.
The rates come from this website's own rates file, which is refreshed from the ECB every working day, so your browser never sends your amounts to anyone. The converter remembers the last rates it loaded and keeps working offline. The rates are mid-market reference rates for information; the rate your bank or card gives you will include a margin.
How to use Currency Converter
- Enter the amount.
- Choose the currency you have (From) and the one you want (To); use the swap button to reverse them.
- Read the converted amount, the rate both ways and the date of the rates.
- Check the table for other currencies, add your own favourites, or share the link.
Features
- 30 currencies, including USD, EUR, GBP, INR, JPY, AUD, CAD, CHF, CNY, SGD and ZAR.
- Official ECB euro reference rates (published every working day), with the rate date always shown.
- Rate shown in both directions, with the date of the rates.
- Favourites table: one amount in many currencies; add or remove currencies.
- Swap button and shareable link with your amount and currencies.
- Works offline with the last rates saved in your browser.
- Amounts rounded the way each currency is written (0 decimals for yen).
- No tracking of your amounts: everything is calculated in your browser.
Where the rates come from
The European Central Bank publishes euro foreign exchange reference rates for about 30 currencies every working day at around 16:00 Central European Time. They are based on a daily concertation between central banks and are widely used for statistics, accounting and invoicing. This site downloads them once a day into its own rates file, and the converter reads that file, so the date under the result tells you exactly which day's rates you see. There are no new rates on weekends and on TARGET holidays, so on those days the previous working day's rates are shown.
How cross rates are calculated
The ECB quotes every currency against the euro. To convert between two other currencies, the converter goes through the euro: amount ÷ rate of the From currency × rate of the To currency.
| Example (illustrative rates) | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 EUR = 1.10 USD and 1 EUR = 100 INR | 100 ÷ 1.10 | 1 USD = 90.91 INR |
| Convert 250 USD to INR | 250 ÷ 1.10 × 100 | 22,727.27 INR |
| Convert 1,000 INR to USD | 1,000 ÷ 100 × 1.10 | 11.00 USD |
| 1 EUR = 0.85 GBP | 1.10 ÷ 0.85 | 1 GBP = 1.2941 USD |
Why your bank's rate is different
Reference rates are mid-market rates: halfway between the price at which banks buy and sell a currency. When you pay by card abroad, send money or exchange cash, the provider adds a margin to the rate and sometimes a fixed fee, often 1% to 5% in total, and more at airport exchange counters. Compare the rate you are offered with the reference rate here to see how much the conversion really costs you. If a card terminal abroad offers to charge you in your home currency (dynamic currency conversion), choosing the local currency is usually cheaper.
Which currencies are included
The converter covers the currencies in the ECB set: the euro, US dollar, Japanese yen, British pound, Swiss franc, Indian rupee, Chinese yuan, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore dollars, South African rand, Brazilian real, Mexican peso, South Korean won, Indonesian rupiah, Malaysian ringgit, Philippine peso, Thai baht, Israeli shekel, Turkish lira, Icelandic króna and the currencies of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania. Some widely used currencies, such as the UAE dirham or the Saudi riyal, are not in the ECB set and are therefore not available here.
Frequently asked questions
How often are the exchange rates updated?
Once every working day, after the European Central Bank publishes its reference rates at around 16:00 CET. The date of the rates is shown under the result.
Why is the rate different from my bank or card?
These are mid-market reference rates. Banks, card networks and exchange offices add a margin or a fee, so the rate you get is less favourable.
Does the converter work offline?
Yes. It saves the last rates it loaded in your browser and uses them when you are offline, clearly marked with their date.
Can I convert USD to INR?
Yes. Choose USD as From and INR as To, or open the converter from a shared link with those currencies already set.
Can I use these rates for invoices or accounting?
ECB reference rates are commonly used for that, but check which rate source your tax authority or contract requires.
Why can't I find the UAE dirham?
The ECB does not publish a reference rate for it, and the converter only shows currencies with an official daily rate in its source.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The rates file comes from this website, and your amounts are converted in your browser.
