Income Tax Calculator India
Calculate income tax for FY 2026-27 and FY 2025-26 under the new and old regimes side by side, with rebate, deductions, surcharge and cess.
Enter your yearly salary and other income, and the calculator works out your income tax under both the new and the old tax regime, so you can see which one costs less. Add your old-regime deductions such as 80C investments, health insurance, HRA and home loan interest to get a fair comparison. A table shows each step: deductions, taxable income, tax at slab rates, the rebate, marginal relief, surcharge and the 4% cess.
The calculator follows the slabs announced in the Union Budget 2025, which continue unchanged for FY 2026-27: no tax on income up to ₹12 lakh under the new regime thanks to the rebate, or about ₹12.75 lakh of salary after the ₹75,000 standard deduction. Everything is calculated in your browser.
How to use Income Tax Calculator India
- Choose the financial year and your age group.
- Enter your gross yearly salary or pension and any other income.
- Add the deductions you can claim under the old regime, if any.
- Compare the tax under both regimes and read the step-by-step table.
Features
- New and old regime side by side, with the cheaper one highlighted
- FY 2026-27 and FY 2025-26
- Standard deduction, 80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest and NPS
- Rebate up to ₹60,000 and marginal relief just above ₹12 lakh
- Senior and super senior citizen exemption limits (old regime)
- Surcharge with marginal relief and 4% cess
New regime tax slabs
The new regime is the default. It has lower rates and a larger rebate but allows almost no deductions apart from the ₹75,000 standard deduction for salaried people and pensioners. Resident individuals with taxable income up to ₹12 lakh get a rebate of up to ₹60,000, which brings their tax to zero. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief makes sure the tax is never more than the income above ₹12 lakh.
| Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹4,00,000 | Nil |
| ₹4,00,001 – ₹8,00,000 | 5% |
| ₹8,00,001 – ₹12,00,000 | 10% |
| ₹12,00,001 – ₹16,00,000 | 15% |
| ₹16,00,001 – ₹20,00,000 | 20% |
| ₹20,00,001 – ₹24,00,000 | 25% |
| Above ₹24,00,000 | 30% |
Tax on common salaries (new regime)
These examples are for a salaried resident under 60 with no other income, after the ₹75,000 standard deduction and including the 4% cess. A salary of ₹13 lakh shows marginal relief: the slab tax on ₹12,25,000 would be ₹63,750, but the tax is limited to the ₹25,000 of income above ₹12 lakh, plus cess.
| Yearly salary | Taxable income | Tax |
|---|---|---|
| ₹12,75,000 | ₹12,00,000 | Nil |
| ₹13,00,000 | ₹12,25,000 | ₹26,000 |
| ₹15,00,000 | ₹14,25,000 | ₹97,500 |
| ₹20,00,000 | ₹19,25,000 | ₹1,92,400 |
| ₹25,75,000 | ₹25,00,000 | ₹3,43,200 |
| ₹50,00,000 | ₹49,25,000 | ₹10,99,800 |
Old regime: when is it better?
The old regime keeps the higher slab rates (5% from ₹2.5 lakh, 20% from ₹5 lakh and 30% above ₹10 lakh, with higher exemption limits of ₹3 lakh at 60 and ₹5 lakh at 80) but allows many deductions. It only wins when your deductions are large. For a ₹15 lakh salary, claiming the full ₹1.5 lakh under 80C, ₹25,000 of health insurance, ₹1.2 lakh of HRA, ₹2 lakh of home loan interest and ₹50,000 in NPS gives an old-regime tax of ₹97,240 against ₹97,500 in the new regime, almost the same. With only 80C and 80D, a ₹12.75 lakh salary pays ₹1,32,600 in the old regime and nothing in the new one.
Salaried people can choose the regime every year when filing the return. People with business income can switch back to the old regime only once.
Surcharge and cess
A surcharge is added to the tax when taxable income is above ₹50 lakh: 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore and 25% above ₹2 crore; in the old regime it rises to 37% above ₹5 crore. Marginal relief limits the extra tax just above each threshold to the income above it. Finally a 4% health and education cess is added to the tax and surcharge. Taxable income and tax are rounded to the nearest ₹10.
What the calculator does not cover
Capital gains on shares and property, lottery winnings and other income taxed at special rates follow their own rates and are not included; the rebate also does not apply to them. The employer's NPS contribution under 80CCD(2), allowed in both regimes, agricultural income and non-resident rules are not covered either. From 1 April 2026 the Income-tax Act, 2025 replaces the 1961 Act and renumbers its sections, but the slabs, rebate and standard deduction stay the same. Use the result as a guide and check your return with the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal or a tax professional.
Frequently asked questions
Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free?
Yes, under the new regime for resident individuals: the rebate of up to ₹60,000 cancels the tax on taxable income up to ₹12 lakh. With the ₹75,000 standard deduction, a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax.
How much tax on a ₹15 lakh salary?
₹97,500 under the new regime (taxable income ₹14,25,000, including cess). Under the old regime it depends on your deductions.
Which regime should I choose?
The one with lower tax. The new regime is usually better unless your deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest, NPS) are large. The calculator shows both.
Did the slabs change for FY 2026-27?
No. Budget 2026 kept the new-regime slabs, the ₹60,000 rebate and the ₹75,000 standard deduction announced in Budget 2025.
What is marginal relief?
Just above ₹12 lakh, the tax is capped at the income above ₹12 lakh, so earning a little more never leaves you worse off. A similar relief applies to surcharge thresholds.
Is my salary information stored?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent or saved.
