Tip Calculator
Work out the tip and total for any bill, split it between friends, round each share up, and tip before or after tax. Any currency.
Settle the bill in seconds. Enter the amount, choose a tip percentage — tap 10, 15, 18, 20 or 25 percent, or type any other — and the Tip Calculator shows the tip, the total, and, if you're sharing, exactly how much each person pays. Round each share or the total up to a whole amount so nobody needs coins, and the effective tip percentage is shown so you know what you're really leaving.
In places where tax is added to the bill, you can enter the tax and choose to tip on the amount before tax, as many etiquette guides suggest. A table compares the common tip percentages for your bill. Pick your currency once and it is remembered in the link; the calculation happens instantly in your browser.

How the tip is calculated
Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100, total = bill + tip, and each person's share = total ÷ number of people. With rounding, each share (or the total) is rounded up to the next whole amount and the tip is increased by the difference, so the restaurant never gets less than you intended. For example, a 100 bill with an 18 percent tip split between four people is 29.50 each; rounded up, each person pays 30 and the tip becomes 20, an effective 20 percent.
How much to tip around the world
Customs vary a lot, and service charges are sometimes already included — check the bill first. These are common practices for sit-down restaurants; always follow local custom.
| Country or region | Typical restaurant tip | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 15–20% | Tips are a large part of servers' pay; 20% is common for good service |
| Canada | 15–20% | Similar to the US; often calculated before tax |
| United Kingdom | 10–12.5% | Often added as a service charge — check the bill |
| Europe (most countries) | 5–10% or round up | Service is usually included; a small extra is a thank you |
| India | 5–10% | Some restaurants add a service charge |
| Australia, New Zealand | Optional, around 10% | Not expected; for very good service |
| Japan, South Korea | None | Tipping is not customary and can cause confusion |
Tipping before or after tax
In the US and Canada, sales tax is added on top of menu prices. Many etiquette guides suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, because the tax is not part of the service. Enter the tax shown on your receipt and switch on "Tip on the amount before tax" to do this; the total still includes the tax. Where prices already include VAT, as in most of Europe and Asia, you simply tip on the total.
Splitting fairly
An even split is quickest, but if one person ordered much more, you can run the calculator once per person with their own part of the bill. Rounding each share up is handy when paying cash, and with card payments rounding the total keeps the receipt tidy. The comparison table under the result shows what each common tip percentage would cost, which helps when the group can't agree.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a 15% tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.15. A quick way: take 10 percent (move the decimal point one place left) and add half of it. For a 60 bill: 6 + 3 = 9.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Enter the bill, the tip percentage and the number of people. The calculator divides the total including tip evenly.
Should I tip on the total with tax?
Etiquette guides usually suggest the amount before tax. Enter the tax and switch on the before-tax option to calculate it that way.
What does round up do?
It rounds each person's share, or the whole total, up to the next whole amount and adds the difference to the tip.
Does it work with any currency?
Yes. Choose your currency from the list; the calculation is the same everywhere.
Is a service charge the same as a tip?
Usually yes. If the bill already includes a service charge, an extra tip is optional.
Is anything stored?
No. The numbers stay in your browser and in the page link only.
