Discount Calculator

Work out the sale price and savings for % off, amount off, two stacked discounts or buy X get Y deals, or find the % off. Tax optional.

Shopping a sale or setting prices for one? The Discount Calculator shows the sale price and exactly how much you save. Enter the original price and a percentage off, or an amount off, and the answer appears as you type. It also handles the trickier cases: two discounts applied one after the other (an extra 10% off a 20% sale is not 30% off), buy X get Y free deals, and working backwards to find what percentage a sale price really is.

Add sales tax or VAT after the discount to see the price you will actually pay at the till. Works with any currency, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser.

How to use Discount Calculator

  1. Choose what to calculate: % off, Amount off, Two discounts, Buy X get Y, or Find the % off.
  2. Enter the original price and the discount.
  3. Optionally add the sales tax or VAT rate.
  4. Read the sale price, the savings and the effective discount; share the link if you like.

How to calculate a discount

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the amount you save, then subtract it from the original price. For 25% off a price of 80: 80 × 25 ÷ 100 = 20 saved, so the sale price is 80 − 20 = 60. A quicker way is to multiply by what is left: 25% off means you pay 75%, and 80 × 0.75 = 60.

Why two discounts don't add up

When a shop offers an extra 10% off sale items that are already 20% off, the second discount applies to the reduced price, not the original. A price of 100 first drops to 80, and 10% of 80 is 8, so you pay 72. That is 28% off in total, not 30%. Likewise 40% off followed by another 20% off is 52% off, not 60%. The Two discounts option shows each step and the true combined discount.

Buy X get Y free deals

In a buy 2 get 1 free offer, every group of three items includes one free item. With three items at 30 each you pay for two, 60 in total, which is 33.33% off. With four items you still get only one free, so you pay 90 and save just 25%. The calculator counts the free items for any basket size, shows the effective discount and the real price per item, so you can see when adding one more item makes the deal better.

Finding the percentage off

To check a sale label, subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price and multiply by 100. An item reduced from 80 to 60 is (80 − 60) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25% off. Use this to compare offers in different stores or to check whether was-and-now prices really match the advertised discount.

Adding sales tax or VAT

In the United States and Canada, sales tax is usually added at the till after the discount, so a 60 sale price with 8% tax costs 64.80. In the UK, the EU, India and Australia, shelf prices normally already include VAT or GST, so leave the tax field empty there. To add or remove GST or VAT from a price, use the GST Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 20% off?

Multiply the price by 0.8. For example, 20% off 50 is 50 × 0.8 = 40, a saving of 10.

Is 20% off plus an extra 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. The second discount applies to the already reduced price, so the total is 28% off. The Two discounts option shows the exact figure.

How do I find the percentage off from two prices?

Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. From 80 to 60 is 25% off.

How much do I save with buy 2 get 1 free?

33.33% when you buy a multiple of three items. With other quantities the saving is smaller; enter your basket size to see it.

Should I add sales tax before or after the discount?

After. Tax is charged on the price you actually pay, so the calculator applies the discount first and then adds the tax.

Can I use it in any currency?

Yes. Choose your currency from the list; the calculation is the same in every currency.

Is my data stored?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Your numbers only appear in the page link, so you can share them.
