Text to Speech
Read text aloud with natural voices in many languages: choose voice, speed, pitch and volume, pause and resume, follow the highlighted sentence.
Paste any text and press Read aloud: the tool speaks it with a natural voice and highlights the sentence being read, so you can follow along. Choose from the voices installed on your device and offered by your browser, in English, Hindi and many other languages, and set the speed, pitch and volume.
Listening is a good way to proofread an email or essay, rest your eyes, learn the pronunciation of a foreign text or take in an article while you do something else. There is no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.
How to use Text to Speech

- Pause, resume and stop
- The sentence being read is highlighted

- Open text files or paste from anywhere
Where the voices come from
This tool uses the speech engine that is built into your web browser, known as the Web Speech API. The voices therefore depend on your browser and device: Windows includes Microsoft voices, Mac and iPhone include Apple voices, Android phones include Google voices, and Chrome and Edge add extra online voices that often sound the most natural.
Voices marked online are provided over the internet by your browser's maker, Google, Microsoft or Apple, so the text being read is sent to them for speech. Choose a voice without the online label if you want everything to stay on your device. This site itself never receives your text.
| Browser or device | Typical voices |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Edge | Natural Microsoft online voices plus Windows voices |
| Google Chrome | Google online voices plus the voices of your operating system |
| Safari on Mac, iPhone and iPad | Apple voices, more can be downloaded in the system settings |
| Android | Google voices from the text-to-speech settings of the phone |
Getting more voices and languages
If the language you need is missing, add a voice to your operating system. On Windows open Settings, Time and language, Speech, and add voices. On a Mac or iPhone open the Accessibility settings, Spoken content, and download voices. On Android install languages in the text-to-speech settings. Reload this page afterwards and the new voices appear in the list.
Microsoft Edge offers the largest choice of natural online voices, including Indian English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi and many more, so it is a good browser to try if the voices elsewhere sound robotic.
Tips for natural reading
Punctuation helps the voice: full stops and commas create pauses, and question marks change the intonation. Write numbers and abbreviations the way they should be spoken if the voice reads them oddly, for example write per cent instead of the symbol.
A speed slightly below normal is easier to follow for language learning, while 1.25 to 1.5 times is popular for listening to long articles. You can change the voice, speed and pitch while reading; the change applies from the next sentence.
Saving the speech as an audio file
Browsers do not allow websites to record the speech produced by the built-in voices, so this tool reads aloud but cannot offer an MP3 download. To keep a recording, play the text and record it with the Voice Recorder or the recorder on your device, for example with the speaker near the microphone or with your system's audio capture.
Frequently asked questions
Is this text to speech free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no character limit per day and no watermark. Very long texts are read up to the first 100,000 characters at a time.
Which languages are supported?
Every language for which your browser or device has a voice: usually English, Hindi, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese and many more. Edge offers the widest choice.
Can I download the speech as MP3?
No. Browsers don't let websites capture the built-in voices. You can record the playback with a separate recorder.
Is my text uploaded?
Not to this site. With voices marked online, your browser sends the text to its own speech service (Google, Microsoft or Apple) to create the audio.
Why does the voice list look different on my phone?
Voices come from each device and browser, so a phone, a Windows PC and a Mac show different lists.
Can I change the speed while it reads?
Yes. Speed, pitch, volume and voice changes apply from the next sentence.
Why did the reading stop?
Some online voices stop after a network problem. Press Read aloud again, or choose a voice without the online label.
