PIN Generator

Generate secure random PIN codes of 4 to 12 digits that avoid common, repeated, sequential, year and date patterns. Made in your browser.

Choosing a PIN yourself usually means choosing a guessable one: birthdays, years, 1234 and repeated digits make up a large share of the PINs people use. The PIN Generator creates truly random PIN codes of 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12 digits with your browser's cryptographic random number generator — the same kind of randomness used for encryption keys.

By default it also rejects PINs that are easy to guess even when random: the most common PINs, one digit repeated (0000), runs like 1234 or 9876, years from 1900 to 2099 and numbers that look like dates. You can also ask for PINs with no repeated digit, and generate up to 50 at once. PINs are created on your device and never stored or sent.

How to use PIN Generator

  1. Choose the number of digits.
  2. Choose how many PINs you need (1 to 50).
  3. Keep "Avoid guessable PINs" on, and optionally choose no repeated digits.
  4. Press Generate and copy your PIN.

Features

  • 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12-digit PINs.
  • Cryptographically secure randomness with no modulo bias.
  • Avoids common PINs, repeated digits, runs, years and dates.
  • Optional: no digit used twice.
  • Up to 50 PINs at once, copy with one click.
  • Made in your browser; never stored or sent.

Why people's PINs are easy to guess

An analysis of 3.4 million four-digit PINs by DataGenetics found that 1234 alone accounted for about 11 percent, and the 20 most common PINs for over a quarter of all PINs. Birth years, dates such as 1225 or 0101, and patterns on the keypad are also very common. A thief who tries the most likely PINs first has a much better chance than the 1 in 10,000 that a random four-digit PIN would give.

How the PINs are generated

Each digit comes from crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographically secure random generator. Random bytes from 250 upwards are thrown away and drawn again, so every digit from 0 to 9 is exactly equally likely (no modulo bias). When a filter rejects a PIN, the whole PIN is drawn again rather than patched, so every PIN that passes the filters is equally likely too. Filtering removes about 8 percent of four-digit PINs (805 of 10,000), so 9,195 remain equally likely, while the most-guessed PINs disappear.

How long should a PIN be?

A 4-digit PIN has 10,000 possibilities and a 6-digit PIN 1,000,000. That is enough only where wrong attempts are strictly limited, as with bank cards (usually blocked after three tries) and phone lock screens that add delays. For anything that can be attacked without limits, such as a file or an account password, use a long password or passphrase instead — the Password Generator makes those. If your device allows longer PINs, 6 or more digits are a good choice.

Keeping your PIN safe

Don't reuse the same PIN for your bank card, phone and door code, and never write it on the card. Shield the keypad when you type it. If you need to remember a new PIN, practise it a few times right away. This page doesn't save the PINs it makes, so copy the one you choose before leaving.

Frequently asked questions

Are these PINs truly random?

Yes. They come from your browser's cryptographically secure random generator, with every allowed PIN equally likely.

Why are some PINs excluded?

PINs like 1234, 0000, years and dates are the first ones thieves try. Excluding them makes your PIN much harder to guess while removing only a small share of possible PINs.

Is a 4-digit PIN secure?

Only where wrong attempts are limited, like bank cards and phones. Use 6 digits or more where you can.

Are generated PINs stored?

No. They are created in your browser and never saved or sent anywhere.

Can I generate PINs without repeated digits?

Yes. Switch on No repeated digits; this works up to 10 digits.

Can I create many PINs at once?

Yes, up to 50, and copy them all with one click.

Should I use a PIN or a password?

Use a PIN only where the device limits attempts. For online accounts, use a long password or passphrase.
