Time Duration Calculator
Calculate the time between two times or dates, minus breaks, in hours and minutes and decimal hours — or add up a list of durations.
How long is a shift from 9:00 to 17:30 with a half-hour lunch? How many hours between 22:00 and 06:30? What is the total of five video clips or a week of time entries? This calculator answers questions like these instantly, and shows the result three ways: hours and minutes, decimal hours (8.5 instead of 8 h 30 min — the format timesheets, payroll and invoices need) and total minutes.
Calculate the time between two clock times, including shifts that run past midnight; between two dates and times, for longer spans such as a trip or a project; or add up a list of durations written in almost any format. Breaks can be subtracted automatically. Nothing you enter is stored or sent.
How to use Time Duration Calculator
- Choose Time between, Between dates and times, or Add up durations.
- Enter the start and end, or type one duration per line.
- Enter any breaks to subtract.
- Read the duration in hours and minutes, decimal hours and minutes.

Common uses
Work out the length of a working day or a night shift, fill in a weekly timesheet, bill a client for hours worked, total the time spent on project tasks, check the running time of videos, podcasts or music for a playlist, plan study sessions, or add up laps and training intervals. Freelancers often keep start and end times and need the total in decimal hours for an invoice — the calculator gives both forms at once, so there is no need to convert by hand.
Decimal hours
Payroll systems, invoices and many timesheet apps record time as decimal hours, where 30 minutes is 0.5 hours rather than 0.30. Mixing the two formats is a common source of errors: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45. The calculator shows both, so you can copy the right one. To convert minutes to decimal hours yourself, divide by 60.
| Minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|
| 15 min | 0.25 |
| 20 min | 0.33 |
| 30 min | 0.5 |
| 40 min | 0.67 |
| 45 min | 0.75 |
Night shifts and dates
In Time between mode, an end time earlier than the start time is taken to be the next day, so 22:00 to 06:30 gives 8 hours 30 minutes, the length of a typical night shift. For anything longer than a day, or to be exact about specific dates, use Between dates and times: it counts the real time between the two moments, so a span that crosses a daylight-saving change is an hour shorter or longer, exactly as a clock on the wall would show.
Adding up durations
Type or paste one duration per line. The calculator understands clock style (1:30 or 1:30:15), units (90m, 1h 30m, 2d 3h, 45s, 1.5h) and plain numbers, which are read as minutes. Lines it cannot read are pointed out by line number, so a typo never silently changes the total. A minus sign subtracts a line. This is handy for totalling a week of time entries, the length of video or audio clips for a playlist, laps, or the time spent on tasks for an invoice.
Tips for timesheets
Round consistently — many employers round to the nearest quarter hour, and labour rules in some countries require rounding that does not favour the employer. Record breaks separately, because paid and unpaid breaks are treated differently in many places. To find the number of working days between two dates, use the Business Days Calculator, and to count days, weeks and months between dates, use the Date Difference Calculator.
