EAN-13 Barcode Generator
Make EAN-13 and ISBN barcodes: the check digit is calculated or verified, one at a time or many at once as a ZIP of SVG or PNG files.
EAN-13 is the barcode on almost every retail product outside North America, and the ISBN barcode on every book is an EAN-13 too. The number has 13 digits, and the last one is a check digit calculated from the other twelve, so a scanner can tell when a digit was misread. Getting that digit wrong is the most common reason a new barcode is rejected.
Type the first 12 digits and the generator calculates the check digit and draws the barcode; type all 13 and it verifies the check digit and tells you the correct one if it is wrong. It also shows what kind of number it is — an ISBN, an ISSN, a UPC shown as EAN-13, or an in-store number. Switch to Many to paste a list of numbers and download every barcode at once as a ZIP of SVG or PNG files. Everything runs in your browser.
How to use EAN-13 Barcode Generator
- Type 12 digits (the check digit is added) or all 13 (it is checked).
- See the barcode and what kind of number it is.
- Download it as SVG or PNG.
- For many codes, choose Many, paste one number per line and download the ZIP.
Features
- Calculates the EAN-13 check digit.
- Verifies 13-digit numbers and shows the right check digit.
- Recognises ISBN, ISSN, UPC and in-store numbers.
- SVG for print or high-resolution PNG.
- Bulk: up to 500 barcodes at once in a ZIP.
- Spaces and hyphens in numbers are ignored.
- Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Common uses
Create barcodes for a product range after receiving your GS1 company prefix, check a supplier's list of EANs for typos before importing it into a shop system, make ISBN barcodes for a self-published book, or produce barcodes for packaging artwork in one batch.
How the check digit works
Starting from the left, the first 12 digits are multiplied alternately by 1 and 3 and added up. The check digit is the amount needed to bring that sum up to the next multiple of 10. For 590123412345 the weighted sum is 83, so the check digit is 7 and the full number is 5901234123457. The calculator does this for you and catches typos in existing numbers.
What the first digits tell you
The first digits of an EAN-13 are a GS1 prefix. Most prefixes identify the GS1 office that issued the company number, not the country where a product was made. A few prefixes have special meanings.
| Starts with | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 978 or 979 | ISBN — a book |
| 977 | ISSN — a magazine or newspaper |
| 0 | A UPC-A product number written as EAN-13 |
| 2 | Restricted: in-store, variable-weight or internal numbers |
| 98 or 99 | Coupons and refunds |
Books and ISBN barcodes
A 13-digit ISBN is already an EAN-13 number: type the ISBN without hyphens, or with them — hyphens are ignored — and the barcode is ready for the back cover. Publishers often print the ISBN in readable form above the barcode as well. A price add-on (the small five-digit barcode used for books in some markets) is not included.
Bulk barcodes and printing
In Many mode, paste up to 500 numbers, one per line. Valid numbers are made into barcodes, duplicates are skipped, and problems are listed by line so you can fix them. The ZIP contains one file per barcode, named after its number. For printing, SVG keeps edges perfectly sharp; print in black on white, keep the empty margins, and do not stretch the barcode. Remember that numbers for products sold in shops must be registered with GS1.
Frequently asked questions
Can I paste numbers with spaces or hyphens?
Yes. Spaces and hyphens are ignored.
What happens to invalid numbers in a batch?
They are skipped and listed by line number, so you can correct them.
How do I calculate an EAN-13 check digit?
Type the first 12 digits; the check digit is calculated and added.
How do I check if an EAN-13 is valid?
Type all 13 digits; the tool says whether the check digit is right and shows the correct one if not.
Can I make an ISBN barcode?
Yes. Type the 13-digit ISBN.
Can I make many barcodes at once?
Yes, up to 500, downloaded as a ZIP of SVG or PNG files.
Does the first digit show the country of origin?
No. It shows which GS1 office issued the number, not where the product was made.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Barcodes are made in your browser.
