Video Cutter

Cut out an unwanted part from the middle of a video and join the rest into one file, with picture and sound in step. Runs in your browser.

Remove the part you don't want — a mistake, an awkward pause, a commercial break or someone walking through the shot — and keep everything before and after it as one smooth video. Open a video, play it, and mark where the unwanted part starts and ends. The Video Cutter removes it, joins the two remaining parts and keeps the sound perfectly in step with the picture.

The cut also works at the very start or end of a video, so you can use it to drop an intro or an ending. The result is re-encoded at high quality and at the original size as an MP4 (H.264 video with AAC sound), the format that plays everywhere. Everything happens in your browser with its built-in media engine; your video is never uploaded.

How to use Video Cutter

  1. Choose or drop a video.
  2. Play it and set Remove from and Remove until around the unwanted part.
  3. Check the note: how much is removed and how long the new video will be.
  4. Press Cut out this part and download the result.

Features

  • Removes a section from the middle, the start or the end.
  • Joins the remaining parts into one file.
  • Sound stays exactly in step with the picture.
  • Original size and frame rate, high quality H.264 / AAC MP4.
  • Opens MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV.
  • Progress and Cancel; runs in your browser, no upload, no watermark.

Cutter or trimmer?

Both tools pick a section with Start and End, but they keep different things. Use the one that matches what you want to keep.

Marking the part to remove

Play the video and pause just before the unwanted part, then press Use current position next to Remove from. Play on to the end of the part and do the same for Remove until. You can also type times such as 1:15 or 75.5. The note below tells you how much will be removed and how long the new video will be; if the selection would remove the entire video, the button stays disabled. To remove several parts, run the cutter again on the result.

Quality and format

Joining two parts of a compressed video needs the picture to be re-encoded, so the cutter re-encodes at a generous bitrate for the size and frame rate of your video; on a phone screen or monitor the result looks the same as the original. The output is an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, which plays on phones, computers, TVs and social networks. In the rare browser that can't encode H.264, the cutter uses WebM (VP9 and Opus) instead.

Private by design

Your video is read in pieces from your device and processed by your browser's WebCodecs engine — the same hardware video encoder your device uses to record and play video. It is never uploaded, there is no account and no watermark, and long videos don't have to travel over the internet twice. Files up to 2 GB can be opened; the time needed depends on the length of the video and the speed of your device.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove a part from the middle of a video?

Open the video, set Remove from and Remove until around the part, and press Cut out this part. The rest is joined into one video.

Will the sound stay in sync?

Yes. Each remaining part keeps exactly its own sound, so picture and sound stay in step after the join.

Does cutting lower the quality?

The video is re-encoded at a high bitrate, so the difference is very hard to see.

Can I remove several parts?

Yes: cut one part, then open the result and cut the next one.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.

Which formats can I cut?

MP4, M4V, MOV, WebM and MKV. The result is an MP4 (or WebM in browsers without an H.264 encoder).

Can I cut the beginning or end?

Yes. Set the cut from the start or to the end of the video; or use the Video Trimmer, which is faster for that.
