Lean Body Mass Calculator

Estimate your lean body mass and fat mass with the Boer, James and Hume formulas, or exactly from a known body-fat percentage.

Lean body mass is everything in your body that is not fat: muscles, bones, organs, skin, blood and water. It matters more than body weight alone for many purposes — it drives how many calories you burn at rest, it is used to set protein targets, and doctors use it to dose some medicines and anaesthetics. Two people with the same weight can have very different lean mass.

This calculator estimates your lean body mass from sex, height and weight with three established formulas — Boer, James and Hume — and shows how far they agree. If you know your body-fat percentage from a body-composition scale, skinfold calipers or a DEXA scan, enter it to get your lean mass directly. Your fat mass is shown too. Metric and imperial units both work, and nothing you enter leaves your browser.

How to use Lean Body Mass Calculator

  1. Choose your sex and units.
  2. Enter your height and weight.
  3. Optionally enter your body-fat percentage if you know it.
  4. Read your lean body mass, fat mass and the estimate from each formula.

Features

  • Boer, James and Hume formulas side by side.
  • Exact lean mass from a known body-fat percentage.
  • Fat mass and lean share of body weight.
  • Metric (cm, kg) and imperial (ft, in, lb).
  • Formula and source shown for every estimate.
  • Runs in your browser; nothing is stored or sent.

How lean body mass is estimated

Without a scan, lean body mass is estimated from height and weight with equations fitted to measurements of real people. The Boer formula (1984) is the most widely used today and tends to be the most accurate for adults of normal build. The James formula (1976) is used in some medical settings, but it gives implausible results for people with a high BMI, because it was fitted on a narrower group. The Hume formula (1966) was developed for estimating body water and blood volume. Showing all three gives you a sense of the uncertainty: when they agree closely the estimate is probably good; when they differ, the real value could be anywhere in the range.

When to use your body-fat percentage

Formulas based on height and weight cannot tell muscle from fat. A muscular athlete and a sedentary person with the same height and weight get the same estimate, even though their lean mass is very different. If you have a body-fat percentage from a reasonably accurate method — a DEXA scan, a BodPod, hydrostatic weighing, or carefully taken skinfold measurements — enter it, and the calculator works out lean mass as your weight minus your fat mass. Bathroom scales with metal pads are less precise, but averaging several readings taken at the same time of day still gives a useful trend. If you don't know your body fat, the Body Fat Calculator can estimate it with a tape measure.

What lean body mass is used for

Lean mass is the main driver of resting energy expenditure, which is why the Katch-McArdle BMR formula uses it instead of weight. Sports nutrition advice often sets protein per kilogram of lean mass rather than total weight, which avoids overestimating needs for people with more body fat. Tracking lean mass over time shows whether a diet is removing fat while keeping muscle — the goal of most weight-loss plans. In medicine, lean body weight is used to dose some drugs, such as certain anaesthetics, that do not distribute into fat.

Accuracy and limits

All three formulas were developed for adults and describe averages. For most people they are within a few kilograms of a laboratory measurement, but very muscular people, very lean people, older adults with less muscle, and people with a high BMI can differ more. They do not apply to children or during pregnancy. Use the result as a starting point for planning and as a trend over time rather than an exact measurement, and talk to a doctor or dietitian about any health decision.

Frequently asked questions

What is lean body mass?

Your total weight minus your body fat: muscles, bones, organs, skin, blood and water.

Which formula is most accurate?

For most adults the Boer formula. If you know your body-fat percentage from a good measurement, that is more accurate still.

Why do the formulas give different results?

They were developed on different groups of people. The spread shows how uncertain an estimate from height and weight is.

Is lean body mass the same as muscle mass?

No. Muscle is only part of lean mass, which also includes bones, organs, skin and water.

Can I use pounds and inches?

Yes. Switch to imperial units; results are shown in pounds.

Is my data stored?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is saved or sent.

Does it work for children?

No. These formulas are for adults.
