RD Calculator

Calculate recurring deposit maturity with quarterly compounding: total deposited, interest earned and a year-by-year table for any monthly amount.

Enter the amount you will deposit every month, the interest rate and the number of months, and the RD calculator shows the maturity value, the total you deposited and the interest earned. A table shows the balance at the end of every year.

A recurring deposit is a simple way to save a fixed sum every month with a guaranteed return. Banks and the post office in India compound RD interest every quarter, and the calculator follows the same method: each instalment earns interest only for the months that remain until maturity.

How to use RD Calculator

  1. Enter the monthly deposit amount.
  2. Enter the yearly interest rate offered by the bank or post office.
  3. Enter the tenure in months, for example 60 for five years.
  4. Read the maturity value, the interest earned and the yearly table.

Features

  • Maturity value, total deposited and interest earned
  • Quarterly compounding as used by Indian banks and the post office
  • Any tenure from 3 to 240 months
  • Year-by-year balance table

How RD interest is calculated

Each monthly instalment is treated as a small fixed deposit that runs until the RD matures. The first instalment earns interest for the full tenure and the last one for only a month. With quarterly compounding, an instalment that stays for m months grows by a factor of (1 + r/400)^(m/3), where r is the yearly rate in percent. The maturity value is the sum over all instalments.

For example, ₹5,000 a month at 7% for 60 months means ₹3,00,000 deposited. The calculator shows a maturity value of about ₹3,59,664, so the interest earned is about ₹59,664.

RD, FD or SIP?

A recurring deposit suits people who want to save a fixed amount every month with a known result and no market risk. A fixed deposit earns more on the same total because the whole amount is invested from day one, so it is the better choice when you already have the money. A SIP in a mutual fund can earn much more over long periods but its returns are not guaranteed.

Many savers use an RD to build a lump sum for a goal a few years away, such as a holiday, a gadget or school fees, and then move the maturity amount into a fixed deposit.

Missed instalments and early closure

Banks usually charge a small penalty for a late instalment and may close the account if several are missed. Closing an RD early is allowed in most banks but the interest rate is reduced, typically by about one percentage point. The calculator assumes every instalment is paid on time at the start of the month.

Tax on RD interest

RD interest is taxable at your income tax slab rate, and banks deduct TDS when the total interest from all your deposits with them crosses the yearly threshold. Submit Form 15G or 15H if your income is below the taxable limit. The calculator shows interest before tax.

Frequently asked questions

How is RD maturity calculated?

Each instalment is compounded quarterly for the months left until maturity, and the results are added. An instalment kept for m months grows by (1 + r/400)^(m/3).

What is ₹5,000 a month for 5 years at 7%?

About ₹3,59,664 at maturity from ₹3,00,000 deposited, so about ₹59,664 of interest.

Does it work for post office RD?

Yes. The post office RD runs for 60 months with quarterly compounding; enter its current rate.

Why is RD interest lower than FD interest on the same total?

Because in an RD the money is deposited gradually, so on average it is invested for only about half the tenure.

Is RD interest taxable?

Yes, at your slab rate, and TDS may be deducted. The calculator shows interest before tax.

Is my data saved?
