How to convert centimetres to inches
An inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimetres, so to convert centimetres to inches you divide by 2.54. For example, 10 cm divided by 2.54 is about 3.937 inches, and 30 cm is about 11.811 inches.
For a quick estimate in your head, multiply the centimetres by 0.4: 10 cm is roughly 4 inches. The converter always uses the exact definition, so its answer is precise to many decimal places.

Where you meet centimetres and inches
Screen sizes for phones, laptops and televisions are measured diagonally in inches almost everywhere, even in countries that use the metric system. Clothing sizes for jeans use inches for waist and leg length, and many online shops list product dimensions in both units.
Height is the other everyday case: a person who is 170 cm tall is about 66.929 inches, which is 5 feet and about 6.9 inches. The converter shows feet as well, so you can read both at once.
Accuracy and rounding
The converter keeps up to ten significant digits, so results such as 3.937007874 inches are shown in full and you decide how to round. For sewing and woodwork, one decimal place in inches is usually enough; for engineering drawings keep two or three.
A number written with a decimal comma, such as 12,5, is understood as well.
Frequently asked questions
How many inches are in one centimetre?
One centimetre is about 0.3937 inches, because an inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres.
What is the formula for cm to inches?
Inches = centimetres ÷ 2.54. For example, 25 cm ÷ 2.54 is about 9.843 inches.
