DOCX to TXT Converter
Convert Word documents to plain text with paragraphs, lists and tables kept readable. Batch, Windows or Unix line endings, no upload.
Choose one or more Word .docx files and get plain .txt files back. The converter keeps the structure readable without any formatting: headings and paragraphs are separated by blank lines, bulleted and numbered lists keep their bullets and numbers, nested lists are indented, and tables become tab-separated lines that paste straight into a spreadsheet.
Plain text opens everywhere, is tiny, and is ideal for pasting into forms, content management systems, e-mail, code, subtitles or AI tools without stray formatting. Choose Windows line endings for Notepad or Mac and Linux line endings for code and servers. The documents are converted in your browser and never uploaded.
How to use DOCX to TXT Converter
- Choose or drop the .docx files.
- Check the preview of the first file.
- Choose the line endings and whether to add a BOM.
- Press Convert and download the .txt files.
What is kept and what is lost
Text, paragraph breaks, headings, list markers and the content of tables are kept. Bold, italics, colours, fonts, images, text boxes, headers and footers are not part of plain text and are left out. Footnotes and comments are not included. If you need to keep formatting, convert to Markdown or HTML instead with the DOCX to Markdown or DOCX to HTML tools.
Line endings and encoding
Windows programs traditionally end lines with two characters, carriage return and line feed (CRLF), while macOS, Linux and most programming tools use a single line feed (LF). Pick the one that suits where the text is going. The text is saved as UTF-8, so every language and symbol is kept. Some older Windows programs only recognise UTF-8 when the file starts with a byte-order mark; turn on the BOM option for them.
Common reasons to convert Word to text
Website editors, online forms and job portals often mangle text pasted straight from a Word document, bringing hidden styles and odd spacing with it; plain text pastes cleanly. Translators, subtitle makers and developers need text without formatting for their tools. Large reports become small, searchable text files for archiving or for feeding into scripts and AI assistants. Converting a whole folder of documents at once and downloading them together saves opening and saving each file in Word one by one, and the result opens instantly on any phone, tablet or computer without Microsoft Office or any other word processor installed.
