GIF to PNG Converter
Convert GIF images to PNG with transparency kept — in your browser, no upload.
Drop GIF images, keep PNG as the output and download lossless PNG files. Transparent GIF backgrounds stay transparent, and you can convert many files at once with a ZIP download.
GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, which is fine for simple graphics but poor for editing. PNG keeps the image exactly as it is and works in every editor, document and presentation program. The conversion runs on your device.
How to use GIF to PNG Converter
- Drop your GIF files or choose them.
- Keep PNG selected under Convert to.
- Convert and check the preview.
- Download the PNG files or the ZIP.
Why convert GIF to PNG
PNG is the modern replacement for GIF for still images: it supports full colour, smooth semi-transparent edges and lossless compression. Converting a still GIF to PNG makes it easier to edit, scale and reuse.
Animated GIFs are converted using their first frame, since PNG holds one image. To keep motion, turn the GIF into a video with the GIF to video tool.
Stickers, emoji-style icons and old website buttons are often GIF files. Converting them to PNG gives you a clean, editable copy that works in documents, slides and design tools, with transparent areas kept so the graphic still sits neatly on any background colour.
GIF and PNG compared
How the two formats differ.
| Feature | GIF | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| Colours | Up to 256 per frame | Millions |
| Transparency | On or off per pixel | Smooth (alpha channel) |
| Animation | Yes | No |
| Best for | Simple animations | Still graphics, editing |
Quality
Converting does not add colours that were not in the GIF, but it also loses nothing: the PNG is an exact copy of the first frame. Further edits in PNG will not suffer from the 256-colour limit.
If you need a smaller file for the web, convert to WebP instead, which also keeps transparency.
Where PNG is better than GIF
PNG files of simple graphics are often smaller than the same GIF, and they look smoother because the edges can be partly transparent. Icons, diagrams and buttons that do not move are good candidates.
For photographs, neither GIF nor PNG is ideal on the web; convert them to JPG or WebP instead for much smaller files.
Frequently asked questions
Is the conversion lossless?
Yes. The PNG is an exact copy of the GIF image.
What happens to animated GIFs?
The first frame is converted. Use GIF to Video to keep the animation.
Does transparency stay?
Yes. Transparent pixels in the GIF stay transparent in the PNG.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Everything is converted in your browser.
Is PNG smaller than GIF?
Often, for simple still graphics. For photos, JPG or WebP is smaller than both.
Can I convert many GIFs at once?
Yes, and download them together as a ZIP.
