MB to GB Converter
Convert megabytes to gigabytes instantly, in decimal (1000) and binary (1024) units.
Type a size in megabytes and read it in gigabytes as you type. The binary units, mebibytes and gibibytes, are listed too, so you can see why your computer and your storage box show different numbers.
Phone plans, cloud storage, video files and downloads are all measured in megabytes and gigabytes. Knowing the exact conversion helps when you check how many videos fit on a memory card or how much of a data plan a download uses.
How to use MB to GB Converter
- Enter the size in MB (for example 1500).
- Read the size in GB immediately.
- Compare with GiB and MiB in the list of all units.
- Swap to convert GB to MB.
How to convert megabytes to gigabytes
In the decimal system used by storage makers and network providers, 1 gigabyte is 1000 megabytes, so divide by 1000: 1500 MB is 1.5 GB.
Operating systems such as Windows count in binary units, where 1 gibibyte (GiB) is 1024 mebibytes (MiB). That is why a 500 GB drive shows as about 465.66 GiB on a computer. Both are listed in the converter.

Everyday sizes
A typical phone photo is a few megabytes, a song in MP3 is a few megabytes per minute, and an hour of HD video can be several gigabytes. A single-layer DVD holds 4.7 GB, which is 4700 MB.
Download speeds are usually in megabits per second (Mbps), not megabytes: divide by 8 to get megabytes per second. The converter lists bits as well as bytes.
Bits and bytes
One byte is 8 bits. Internet speeds are measured in megabits per second, so a 100 Mbps connection downloads at most about 12.5 megabytes per second. A 1.5 GB file takes about two minutes at that speed in ideal conditions.
The converter lists bits as well as bytes; to turn megabits into megabytes, divide by 8 before converting.
Frequently asked questions
How many MB are in 1 GB?
1000 MB in the decimal system used for storage and data plans; 1024 MiB in 1 GiB in the binary system.
Why does my computer show less space than advertised?
The drive is sold in decimal gigabytes but the computer counts binary gibibytes, which are about 7 per cent larger, so the number looks smaller.
How many GB is 2000 MB?
2000 MB is 2 GB.
How do I convert GB to MB?
Multiply by 1000, or press swap.
How many megabytes per second is 100 Mbps?
About 12.5 MB per second, because one byte is 8 bits.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser.
