MP4 to WAV Converter
Extract the audio of an MP4 video as a WAV file: uncompressed 16-bit sound, at the original or a chosen sample rate. In your browser, no upload.
Open an MP4 video and download its soundtrack as a WAV file. The picture is left out; the sound is decoded once and written uncompressed, ready for an audio editor, a transcription service or a video project. MOV, M4V, MKV and WebM videos work the same way.
Everything happens in your browser. Your video is not uploaded, which matters for recordings of meetings, interviews, lectures or family videos, and it also means there is no waiting for an upload or a download of a large file before the conversion can start.
How to use MP4 to WAV Converter
- Choose or drop your MP4 video.
- Keep the original sample rate, or choose 48 kHz for video work or 16 kHz for speech.
- Keep stereo, or choose mono for voice recordings.
- Press Convert to WAV and download the audio file.
Why take the sound of a video as WAV
The sound in an MP4 is almost always compressed, usually as AAC. When you want to work on that sound, for example to clean up the voice in a screen recording, to edit an interview, to add music under it or to give it to a transcription service, an uncompressed WAV is the safest starting point: every editor opens it, and editing does not add another layer of compression. Video editors and audio editors such as Audacity, Adobe Audition, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut and GarageBand all accept it.
The right settings for video and for speech
For a video project, keep the original sample rate or choose 48 kHz, the standard rate in film and video, so the audio lines up with the picture without resampling. For speech, such as meetings, lectures, voice notes and interviews, choose 16 kHz and mono: transcription and subtitle services expect it, and the file becomes much smaller, about 1.9 MB per minute. Music videos sound best kept in stereo at their own rate.
WAV or MP3?
WAV keeps the sound uncompressed, which makes it the right choice for editing and for services that ask for it, but it is large: about 10.6 MB per minute at 44.1 kHz stereo. If you only want to listen to the audio of a video, or send it to someone, MP4 to MP3 gives a far smaller file of similar quality for listening.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert MP4 to WAV?
Open the MP4, choose the sample rate and channels, press Convert to WAV, and download the WAV file.
Can I convert MOV, MKV or WebM videos too?
Yes. Any of these video types can be opened; only their sound is converted.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The audio is taken out and converted in your browser, so the video stays on your device.
Which settings are best for transcription?
16 kHz and mono: most speech recognition and subtitle services recommend them.
Does the WAV lose quality compared with the video?
No. The video's sound is decoded and stored uncompressed, so the WAV sounds exactly like the video.
