PNG to WebP Converter
Convert PNG images to WebP with transparency kept — smaller files, in your browser, no upload.
Drop your PNG files, keep WebP as the output and download smaller images with the transparent background still intact. Batches are downloaded as a single ZIP file.
PNG files are often large because they are compressed without loss. Logos, screenshots, icons and product photos with a transparent background can usually be saved as WebP at a fraction of the size, which speeds up websites and online shops. The conversion happens entirely in your browser.
How to use PNG to WebP Converter
- Drop your PNG files or choose them.
- Keep WebP selected under Convert to.
- Set the quality, or keep the default.
- Download the images or the ZIP of all of them.
Transparency is kept
Unlike JPG, WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas of your PNG stay transparent in the WebP. Logos on coloured backgrounds and cut-out product photos keep their clean edges.
If you need a solid background instead, choose JPG as the output and pick the background colour.
For graphics that must stay pixel-perfect, the WebP Converter on this site also offers lossless WebP, which keeps every pixel and is usually still smaller than the PNG. For photos, the quality slider here gives the biggest saving.
PNG and WebP compared
How the two formats differ.
| Feature | PNG | WebP |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossless | Lossy or lossless |
| Transparency | Yes | Yes |
| Typical file size | Large | Smaller |
| Best for | Editing, sharp graphics | Publishing on websites |
Screenshots and graphics
Screenshots with text and flat colours compress very well. Compare the result: if fine text looks soft, raise the quality slider. Photos saved as PNG usually shrink the most when converted to WebP.
Keep your original PNG files for editing; use the WebP versions for publishing.
Using WebP on your website
Upload the WebP files to your website or online shop the same way as PNG files. Most content management systems, including WordPress, accept WebP uploads. If you need a fallback for very old browsers, keep the PNG and offer both files with the HTML picture element.
Check your page speed before and after: smaller images usually improve loading time on phones the most.
Frequently asked questions
Does WebP keep transparency?
Yes. Transparent areas of the PNG stay transparent in the WebP.
Why is my PNG so large?
PNG uses lossless compression, which keeps every pixel exactly, so photos in PNG are much larger than they need to be for the web.
Are the files uploaded?
No. Everything is converted on your device.
Can I convert a whole folder?
Yes. Drop many files at once and download them all as a ZIP.
Does WordPress accept WebP?
Yes. Current versions of WordPress accept WebP uploads like JPG and PNG.
Do all browsers show WebP?
Yes, all current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display WebP images.
